Training junior officers for team leadership

Britannia aimed to produce broadly prepared junior officers who could lead assigned tasks while drawing on senior ratings and shipmates.

Notes

The college did not expect junior officers to solve every problem alone. It gave them enough broad knowledge to understand orders, organize a boat crew, communicate with another ship, and lead a task with help from senior ratings and other specialists. That grounding supplied a knowledge base for the formation as a whole rather than promising individual mastery. Leadership training also came through the instructors selected, the subjects taught, and the practical responsibility given to cadets.
