Train ferries help rebuild Allied rail logistics after D-Day

Why the ferries resumed locomotive transport after Allied bombing damaged the railways needed to supply the advance from Normandy.

Notes

After D-Day, the converted ferries could resume part of their original job by carrying locomotives to continental Europe. Allied bombing had damaged the transport infrastructure that German forces needed before the invasion. Once ashore, Allied armies also depended on railways for long-distance logistics. Bringing engines to Europe supported rapid reconstruction of that network. The same campaign that helped isolate the battlefield had therefore created a supply problem for the advancing armies.
