Why signals traffic can matter more than codebreaking

Radio use reveals locations and patterns even when messages remain encrypted.

Notes

Message decryption and traffic analysis answer different questions. A transmission can disclose who is active, where they are, and how a force is moving even when its contents remain unreadable. Repeated radio use builds a pattern that an opponent may exploit before breaking a difficult cipher. Enigma procedures, including repeated greetings and routine weather formats, show how operator habits can weaken a powerful system. Mail, wired telephones, or direct connections to ships can reduce radio exposure, although they impose delay and physical constraints. German tapping of British telephone wires in World War I also influenced British practice, so leaving radio did not make a channel intrinsically safe. Secure content, disciplined procedures, controlled emissions, and movement have to work together.
