Trafalgar was not Britain's only defensive barrier

A Franco-Spanish victory at Trafalgar would still have left two major Royal Navy forces between France and an invasion of Britain.

Notes

A Franco-Spanish victory at Trafalgar would not immediately have opened Britain to invasion. The combined fleet still had to pass the Royal Navy's Western and Channel forces before it could secure an army's passage. Those formations were larger than Nelson's fleet and led by experienced commanders, giving Britain strategic depth beyond the famous battle. Nelson could accept tactical risk partly because his fleet was one of several maritime barriers.
