Tradition after Jutland: use history critically

The absence of a second Trafalgar at Jutland made the older battle a stronger emotional touchstone, though it remained a poor model for blind imitation.

Notes

Trafalgar's apparent clarity contrasts with the far less tidy reality of Jutland and war more generally. A tradition can build common purpose and give naval personnel a setting to discuss strategy and history. Its usefulness depends on critical engagement: historical examples should sharpen thought rather than be massaged into easy justification for present-day preferences.
