The allied turn and a hypothetical third column

The allied reversal changed the targets facing Nelson's columns; extra British ships could have changed the attack again.

Notes

In this interpretation, Nelson began forming his columns while he expected the allied fleet to continue toward Gibraltar. Collingwood's heavier column was intended to strike its van, while Nelson aimed for the centre and flagship. The allied reversal toward Cadiz changed which part of the line Collingwood encountered. A hypothetical third British column could have attacked the remaining van and prevented Dumanoir's escape. It might also have divided allied fire more widely, although Nelson's survival cannot be assumed.
