Trafalgar illustrates British fleet depth

A Trafalgar counterfactual connects reserve mobilization and multiple British fleets to strategic resilience after a possible defeat.

Notes

A counterfactual asks what Britain could have done if Nelson had lost the Battle of Trafalgar. Other forces stood between the Franco-Spanish fleet and Britain, including the large Western Squadron off Brest. Reserve ships at Chatham and elsewhere in the Thames Estuary could also have formed another fleet. Impressment and reserve personnel were part of the larger problem of regenerating combat power after a major loss. The deliberately comic comparison with Rome raising new legions against Hannibal captures how repeated British fleet generation could frustrate an enemy expecting one victory to settle the war.
