Layered experience kept the Royal Navy fighting at Trafalgar

Experience at every level, a practiced command structure, and a crew drawn from many backgrounds allowed British ships to keep fighting after Nelson fell.

Notes

The Royal Navy's advantage lay in layers of experience extending from admirals through captains and ships' companies. Nelson, Collingwood, and Rear Admiral William Carnegie provided depth at flag level, while repeated service had prepared subordinates to act without waiting for new direction. HMS Victory's crew, drawn from 24 nations and speaking perhaps 40 languages or dialects, shows how training could weld people from different backgrounds into an effective fighting unit. Once the line was broken, individual captains understood how to continue their battles against the ships in range. Nelson's death did not paralyze the fleet because experience and delegated action already existed throughout the organization.
