Chapter ยท 3:24:19-3:35:12

Captures, destruction, and the fate of Trafalgar's prizes

Account for the captured, recaptured, burned, exploded, and storm-wrecked ships behind Trafalgar's headline result.

Notes

The initial tally gives twenty-two allied vessels taken or lost, with no British ship lost in the battle. A later tally distinguishes twenty-one captured ships of the line from one destroyed. These figures need to be separated from the number of prizes that ultimately survived. Some ships were recovered, burned to prevent recapture, or wrecked in the gale after the battle. Achille's explosion belongs to the destruction total rather than to the list of surviving prizes.
