Berwick, an Elizabeth-class third rate built for the Royal Navy, was among the older ships serving with the French at Trafalgar. Another British-built Elizabeth-class ship, Swiftsure, also fought for France. A different British-built Swiftsure served in the Royal Navy, so the shared name did not identify a single vessel or a single side. The older British contingent also included the 64-gun Agamemnon and Africa, examples of a smaller third-rate type. Construction origin, age, and current service therefore need to be distinguished when comparing the fleets.

British-built ships fought on both sides at Trafalgar
Berwick and the two Swiftsures show how captured ships and reused names complicate a national order of battle.
