Chapter ยท 4:09-5:16

Why Trafalgar matters beyond the battle

Trafalgar's enduring importance lies more in its legacy than in a radically new battle plan.

Notes

Trafalgar was not an elaborate manoeuvre battle. Once the fleets closed in open water, neither side had terrain that could transform the engagement. Nelson's two-column attack was a practical way to bring British firepower into action sooner. The larger subject is how Trafalgar and Nelson shaped British naval thinking long after 1805.
