Southampton, Gloucester, and Edinburgh subclass tradeoffs

A comparison of the three Town subclasses shows how length, machinery, armor, crew needs, and wartime reconstruction changed the design.

Notes

The Southampton, Gloucester, and Edinburgh groups grew from roughly 9,100 to 10,550 standard tons while retaining high declared speeds. The Gloucester group's additional displacement largely purchased more armor, while the longer Edinburgh hull helped reconcile greater size with speed. Belfast's mine damage later led to a wider beam and deeper draft during reconstruction, illustrating how survival and modernization could materially alter an individual ship. Crew requirements also varied with machinery-space layout and the extra personnel carried for overseas duties.
