From royal escorts to the Singtao confrontation

Prewar Towns escorted royalty, represented Britain overseas, and supplied a deliberately restrained but credible instrument in a tense China Station confrontation.

Notes

HMS Sheffield and HMS Newcastle escorted the king and queen on their North American visit, placing brand-new Town-class cruisers at the center of an overseas royal showcase. HMS Birmingham's role in the Singtao or SS Vincent de Paul incident demonstrates the harder edge of presence: she faced three Japanese heavy cruisers while withdrawing a merchant ship. The available British force also included four County-class heavy cruisers, but sending one of them would have created a more provocative eight-inch-for-eight-inch confrontation. The opposing ships pointed guns at one another at harbor distances of only a few hundred meters, where the nominal six-inch versus eight-inch distinction offered little reassurance. Birmingham therefore signaled resolve while preserving a thin layer of restraint.
