Why the Town fitted the Royal Navy's cruiser role

The Town's logistics and sustained fire suited Royal Navy cruiser missions, while heavy cruisers and proposed 9.2-inch ships answered different requirements.

Notes

The Town's firepower, logistics, and operating characteristics matched the independent cruiser tasks expected of it. An 8-inch gun offered greater shell power and range, but the Royal Navy's studies valued the Town's reliable volume of fire at likely engagement distances. The later Neptune plans and the Tiger class continued this general direction. A 9.2-inch cruiser could serve as a partial substitute for battleship capacity as older capital ships disappeared. That would be a different requirement from the ordinary cruiser role. The preferred calibre followed doctrine and fleet need, so the argument applies to a specific mission rather than claiming universal superiority.
