The 1910 Town class as an overlooked imperial cruiser

The Town-class cruisers illustrate how a successful general-purpose type could disperse across imperial stations and almost vanish into routine service.

Notes

The 1910 Town class was more than an origin point for the modern cruiser. Its usefulness allowed the ships to spread so widely that the Admiralty could almost lose track of which distant station still had one. The joke that an old Town might have appeared in the Second World War with the same crew it had decades earlier captures their persistence. Routine imperial deployment can make a durable general-purpose class less visible than more dramatic capital ships. Longevity, distribution, and everyday service were important parts of the class's naval significance.
