The Town class gave central space to aviation and sea control for a globally deployed Royal Navy. The Brooklyn class concentrated fifteen guns and placed aircraft aft for battle-fleet combat and destroyer support in a Pacific war. Town also retained torpedoes, whereas Brooklyn expected accompanying destroyers to provide them. Neither design is superior in the abstract because each exchanges weapons, protected volume, and aviation arrangements to match a different operational environment and force structure.
