The Battle of Toulon is dated 11-12 February under the Old Style calendar and 21-22 February under the New Style calendar. Britain brought 32 ships of the line, two frigates, two fireships, and a hospital ship against 28 French ships of the line, four frigates, and four fireships. Britain lost a fireship and France lost one ship of the line. Thomas Mathews' loss of control and order to withdraw dominated the aftermath. Mathews and several captains were court-martialled and dismissed from the Royal Navy, after which William Rowley became commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean.

Command failure at the Battle of Toulon
