Torpex combines RDX and TNT with powdered aluminium. The aluminium extends the expansion of hot gases and therefore the damaging impulse, but it also complicates stability. Beeswax, and later paraffin wax, reduces sensitivity to shock, while calcium chloride addresses moisture absorption and the resulting danger of hydrogen formation. The formulation had to be proven safe for long-term storage before large stocks of bombs, mines, and torpedoes could be trusted.

How Torpex combines energy with safe handling
RDX, TNT, aluminium, wax, and moisture control balance greater blast duration against shock sensitivity and storage hazards.
