Torpedo aiming as art and science

A successful torpedo attack combines calculation with a judgment about where a moving opponent will be.

Notes

The practical problem is getting a hit while the firing ship, target, and torpedo are all moving. The target may turn, slow, reverse engines, or react in ways the attacker cannot fully know. Training, speed estimates, and calculated run times narrow the possibilities without determining the answer. The person aiming must still form a picture of what the opposing commander is likely to do and place the weapon where that future position will be. Torpedo fire control is technical work completed by tactical judgment, which makes it an art as well as a science.
