Why Tordenskjold resembled a privateer

The opening introduces Peter Wessel Tordenskjold as an unusually independent Danish-Norwegian officer whose short career resembled privateering as much as conventional naval service.

Notes

The Captain Jack Sparrow comparison rests on Tordenskjold's audacity, aggressive cruising, and willingness to act outside the habits of a conventional officer. Peter Wessel served the Royal Danish-Norwegian Navy from 1705 to 1720 and died at only thirty. Although he held a royal commission, his conduct often resembled the privateer world. His short career still produced an enduring Scandinavian naval reputation.
