Chapter · 36:56-38:02

The Gothenburg squadron and vice-admiral rank

Despite friction with senior officers, Tordenskjold's 1719 capture and destruction of much of the Gothenburg squadron carries him from rear admiral to vice admiral.

Notes

Tordenskjold's youth and rapid promotion generated resentment among officers who believed he had advanced ahead of them. Even Christian Carl Gabel, once a useful superior, felt that Tordenskjold had not adequately credited his role in Dynekilen and other operations. These institutional frictions did not stop Tordenskjold from pursuing the Gothenburg squadron, much of which he captured or destroyed in September 1719. That success brought his final promotion from rear admiral to vice admiral shortly before the war ended.
