Tone-class layout puts air search ahead of balanced gunnery

The Tone class concentrates its main battery forward and aviation aft, embodying Japan's preference for long-range reconnaissance and offensive attrition.

Notes

The Tone-class design concentrated all four main-battery turrets forward to create a large aviation working area aft. That arrangement gave the ship some all-round gun coverage but made it less balanced as a conventional cruiser. A three-turret alternative might have released weight for better protection and stability. The completed ship instead accepted limited armour and an unconventional gun layout to maximize embarked reconnaissance. Air search, long-range attack support, and offensive attrition governed the design.
