The Tolmino bridgehead survives a superior Italian assault force

Italian superiority in men and equipment failed to overcome a defended bridgehead that remained important for the later attack at Caporetto.

Notes

Eliminating the Austro-Hungarian bridgehead west of Tolmino was a major Italian objective. The newly formed 27th Corps had superior numbers, artillery, and ammunition, but was poorly prepared for the assault. Machine guns and well-directed artillery repelled its attacks. The surviving bridgehead would later play an important part in the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo at Caporetto.
