Tokiwa opened the battle third in Kamimura's six-ship line and joined the pressure on the Russian battle formation. The armored cruisers later broke away to hunt Russian cruisers, then turned back and attacked the rear of the battle line at roughly eight to nine kilometers. Renewed contact the next day left Rear Admiral Nebogatov's surviving ships unable either to answer effectively at range or close against faster opponents, contributing to their surrender. Tokiwa herself absorbed one large and seven smaller shell hits. One crewman was killed and fourteen were wounded, but the ship suffered only minor damage, demonstrating the protection and tactical flexibility for which the class had been selected.

Tokiwa shifted between the battle line and cruiser pursuit, then helped impose a range-and-speed problem the surviving Russian ships could not solve.
