Titanic survivors describe the disaster from inside the lifeboats

A compilation of firsthand Titanic testimony shows how class, cold, improvised survival, and earlier White Star Line experience shaped individual accounts.

Notes

A Pen and Sword collection brings together testimony from people who experienced the Titanic disaster. Joseph Hammond's account follows occupants of Collapsible C as they searched for other boats, saw men supported by wreckage and deck chairs, and rowed toward the lights of a rescue ship while first-class women suffered badly from the cold. Hammond later reflected that travelling in second class had improved his chance of survival and that aggressive action often mattered during the evacuation. Stewardess Kate Gold's history includes earlier White Star Line incidents, including Olympic's collision with HMS Hawke, connecting Titanic testimony with her previous service at sea.
