Tillman IV and the limits of multi-gun turrets

Tillman IV’s 24 16-inch guns in four sextuple turrets demonstrates why maximum firepower could create overwhelming mechanical and layout problems.

Notes

The proposal’s headline armament is spectacular, but the video uses it to explain the compounding difficulty of putting more guns into one turret. A sextuple mounting would be extremely cramped and vulnerable to cascading mechanical problems, making the paper total far less useful than it first appears. The rough rule offered in the video is that complexity rises sharply with every additional gun, so a nominal six-gun turret would be unlikely to keep all six weapons working together. Even so, demanding such studies forced the Navy to test the outer boundary of its gunnery and hull-design assumptions.
