The conversion retained forward six- and three-inch mountings while replacing the after battery with a hangar, flight deck, and two Sea Cat launchers. Space for four Wessex or Sea King helicopters turned the ships into useful aviation platforms as well as command cruisers. Blake received extensive command-and-control facilities that the carriers and amphibious ships of the period often lacked. In a Falklands scenario, one ship could have supported overall task-force command while another assisted the San Carlos landing force. Their helicopters, antiaircraft gun, and six-inch shore-bombardment reach would have added practical capability as well as staff space.
