A Tiger memoir and the production question

The review introduces a Tiger-tank memoir, allows that the Panther is more understandable, and asks whether Germany would have gained more from producing improved Panzer IVs in greater numbers.

Notes

The review begins from a force-design objection rather than enthusiasm for Germany's heavy tanks. The Panther is more understandable, but the resources devoted to the Tiger and King Tiger might have produced more Panzer IVs, perhaps with further up-gunning and improvement. This comparison makes the Tiger memoir useful for thinking about what an army gives up when it chooses a small number of powerful vehicles over a larger, simpler fleet. The personal account can therefore be read alongside the wartime tradeoffs between quality, quantity, and industrial effort in armoured production.
