Chapter · 1:22:55-1:25:22

Tiger and the danger of battleship fights

Tiger's global-cruiser role allowed running fights with other battlecruisers, while fixed-line engagements with battleships exposed the limits of her protection.

Notes

Tiger could fight other battlecruisers while retaining the British emphasis on global cruising and presence. A running engagement allowed movement and manoeuvre that a fixed battle line restricted. Even German and Japanese battlecruisers intended to support their battleships faced severe danger if they had to remain at battleship speed and trade fire at battleship ranges. In this critique of Jutland, British battlecruisers should have been withdrawn from such fighting. The attempt to add their firepower to the battle line exposed them to a role their protection could not sustain.
