Ticonderoga was a practical refinement of the Essex design. The extended bow improved seakeeping and stability while creating more room for anti-aircraft armament. Revised flight-deck length and shaping opened better arcs of fire for those weapons. The Mediterranean experience observed by American personnel reinforced the need for dense air defence and a sustained ammunition supply. Operational experience with the Yorktown class, USS Wasp, and the Lexington class also fed into the long-hull Essex design. Internal ammunition routes and placement of the combat information or fighter-control centre affected how effectively the weapons could be used.
