Three ways navies preserve institutional memory

A force can retain experience through continuity, specialist cadres and manuals, or historical study - but the latter two are fragile on their own.

Notes

Navies retain knowledge in three main ways: keep a large force continuously doing the task, preserve expertise in small specialist groups with written guidance, or teach history through historians and officers' accounts. Continuous practice is the strongest method, but it only works while the force remains large and performs the relevant task. Specialist cadres and manuals can preserve dormant capabilities, while historical study gives officers access to experience they did not live through. Technical education and the humanities must reinforce one another because officers need accumulated experience as well as current systems knowledge.
