Why a three-enemy war required different fleets

Germany, Italy, and Japan imposed different escort, capital-ship, carrier, and repair demands that Britain's interwar funding never fully reconciled.

Notes

Preparing to fight Germany, Italy, and Japan simultaneously required more than a larger version of one fleet. Germany demanded escorts and fast capital ships, while Italy threatened Mediterranean communications and drove requirements for battleships and damage-tolerant carriers. The Far East added extreme distance and limited repair capacity, making armored carriers attractive because a smaller surviving air group was more useful than a larger carrier lost beyond practical repair. Worldwide strategy, industrial resources, and ship design all shaped the armored-flight-deck decision.
