Chapter ยท 13:55-15:01

The Dutch escorts hold for three hours before command collapses

The Dutch flagship resisted Jean Bart's Maure until its commander was killed, after which the escort force surrendered ship by ship.

Notes

The Dutch commander's biography is obscure, but the reaction to his death suggests that his leadership held the defense together. The flagship resisted Jean Bart's Maure for about three hours from roughly seven in the evening. Once the commander was killed, the surviving flagship officers surrendered. The other four escorts then capitulated in succession, leaving the merchant convoy exposed to capture and burning after ten o'clock at night.
