Thornycroft favored a strongly built hull paired with a very powerful machinery plant. Tartar used six boilers in three rooms and three turbine-driven shafts, while a raised bow improved sea-keeping relative to many sisters. Although officially a 33-knot destroyer, she exceeded 36 knots on trials and later set a recorded 37-knot speed without forced draft. Her wartime career included the Dover Strait action, salvage work after submarine E11 was mined, and recovery from her own mine damage.
