Thomas's naval career prepared him for Pacific diplomacy

Experience around South America, the French occupation of Tahiti and dealings with American interests prepared Thomas to negotiate in Hawaii.

Notes

Richard Darton Thomas combined a long naval career with experience of diplomatic disputes. His service included wartime ship commands and responsibility for vessels in ordinary at Portsmouth and Plymouth. In the Pacific he had dealt with the French occupation of Tahiti and worked with American interests. Those dealings earned him a reputation as a capable intermediary. He arrived in Hawaii with experience of the sovereignty disputes that a frigate captain could find difficult to resolve.
