Great Britain, the Holy Roman Empire, Russia, Naples, Sicily, and Sweden stood on the coalition side, while Britain used income tax to finance the war. Opposite them were the French Republic and, after 1804, Napoleon's First French Empire. The Batavian Republic, the French-controlled Kingdom of Italy, Bavaria, Württemberg, and Etruria show how French power operated through dependent or allied states as well as direct conquest. Naples and Sicily appear separately because the Italian peninsula had not yet undergone unification. This political map supplies the context needed to understand Trafalgar as part of a coalition war.
