Thetis calibrates force on the Bering Sea Patrol

Working with the United States Navy against Bering Sea poaching, Thetis was powerful enough to resist pressure but too modest to resemble an escalatory battlefleet deployment.

Notes

Thetis joined the United States Navy in suppressing Bering Sea poaching when all sides understood the problem but had to manage it diplomatically. Her second-class cruiser status occupied a useful middle ground: American forces could neither ignore nor bully her, yet could not plausibly call her a major threat. That presence is treated as conflict prevention because visible disinterest can invite opportunism from an expansionist power. The withdrawal of Britain's South Atlantic patrol vessel before the Falklands War shows how absence can also become a strategic signal. Thetis later became a minelayer and accepted a final blockship role in the Zeebrugge operation.
