The missing third rate of the First World War

The Tiger Cub would supply the numerous, globally useful third-rate warship missing from the First World War fleet.

Notes

Old armored cruisers and pre-dreadnoughts were nearing retirement, while modern battlecruisers were too scarce and costly to inherit all their work. A 9.2-inch station cruiser supplies the mass needed for deterrence, escort, distant presence, and reinforcement without demanding new capital-ship infrastructure. The likely explanation for postponing such a purchase is political restraint rather than a shortage of money, yards, guns, or crews. Without the war, the requirement probably returns in 1914 or 1915 as the older ships leave service.
