Why 1920s Thailand should not be mapped as Japan's ally

Thailand's later wartime alignment should not be projected backward into the 1920s, when it stood closer to Britain than to Japan.

Notes

A suggestion that Thailand belonged in Japan's camp on a map of the 1920s is corrected. Thailand was then closer to Britain than to Japan, and British influence helped it deter French pressure. A strategic map must reflect the alliances and leverage of its own decade rather than later Second World War alignments.
