Born in Paris, Texas, Richardson entered Annapolis in 1898 and graduated fifth in a class of eighty-five. His upbringing encouraged learning and a willingness to test an authority's argument rather than defer to rank. His early assignment to the Asiatic Squadron included service in the Philippine campaign. Academic distinction and early Pacific experience help explain why the Navy soon trusted him with independent command.
