Testing new warships and practical equipment

Fisher became a trusted captain for new ships because he tested designs hard enough to expose defects that ordinary crews could still fix.

Notes

On Northampton and later Inflexible, Fisher's gunnery and torpedo expertise made him a trusted evaluator of new ships and equipment. He deliberately made every foreseeable fault occur while testing Captain Philip Colomb's lamp design. The lamp still impressed him because ordinary crewmen could identify and repair each failure without calling its inventor. Fisher valued robust equipment whose service faults could be understood and remedied by the crew.
