Chapter · 34:42-35:51

Terror's final fight off Benghazi

Terror's loss to air attack shows the limits of her altered anti-aircraft battery and the courage of a crew defending an exposed monitor.

Notes

A painting of Terror's last fight introduces the question of whether retaining her high-angle three-inch guns might have improved her defence against dive bombers. In this interpretation, the replacement machine guns could engage only after attacking aircraft were already dangerously close, while the four-inch battery was less suitable for that threat. Terror was lost off Benghazi on 24 February 1941 after attacks involving Ju 87s and possibly Ju 88s. Captain Heynes received the Distinguished Service Order, and other officers and sailors were decorated or mentioned in dispatches for the ship's determined defence.
