Terrier, Tartar and a missile screen spread across ships

Different missile ranges, gun layers and ship-directed fighters make air defence a shared task across several hulls.

Notes

Terrier is identified as already in service in 1956, while Talos is included in the comparison despite arriving in 1958. Terrier's quoted range is 17.3 nautical miles with an 80,000-foot ceiling, and the Tartar example has an 8.7-nautical-mile range and a 50,000-foot ceiling. Missile systems are distributed across several ships, with some hulls carrying more than one type. This expands the idea of the screening force as a collection of complementary assets. The 3-inch/70 gun and fighter patrols directed by ships remain parts of the defensive layers.
