Firing Terrier around a launcher blind arc

A detailed account explains how Terrier launchers' superstructure blind arcs led to a missile-guidance workaround that foreshadowed vertical launch thinking.

Notes

The discussion follows the limits imposed when a trainable Terrier launcher could not point through parts of the ship's superstructure. Operators originally entered hard-stop angles into fire-control computers and could sometimes compensate by changing course, but short warning or restricted manoeuvring made that unsatisfactory. Because the missile's homing system could correct its flight path, an engineer proposed launching it offset from the ideal bearing and supplying corrected target information. Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory analysis reportedly validated the idea outside a 10,000-yard minimum range, and later 45-degree upward firing offered a more complete all-bearing solution. Guidance logic could therefore compensate for a physical constraint in the launcher layout.
