Why Terra Invicta complicates a solar-system defence plan

Superior alien technology, orbital distances, limited communications, and a divided Earth constrain the proposed defence and reaction fleets.

Notes

The initial fleet plan assumes resources that humanity does not yet control in the scenario. Other participants point out that Earth remains politically divided, governments can obstruct one another, and the player cannot simply begin with the whole solar system as an industrial base. Realistic orbital mechanics and the absence of faster-than-light communications complicate movement and response. The discussion considers asteroid-belt minefields, but a proposal to throw large asteroids meets the objection that early commercial spaceflight cannot yet support it. Developing Mars as a resource base would require time and protection, while abandoning Earth is described as a losing condition. A lunar base is also suggested as important to the defence.
