Why inventions arrive when needs align

Punch-card machinery and steam engines illustrate how earlier demand and investment could bring a technology into use sooner, with a different or less efficient design.

Notes

Technologies do not have to appear only at their familiar historical date. Punch-card control and late-1940s CNC work associated with helicopter rotor blades drew on machinery that already existed. Earlier development lacked the combination of need, funding, and sustained effort that brought the solution together. A technological counterfactual can therefore produce an earlier design, although it may be less efficient.
