New technology adds layers to warfare

Tanks, carriers, submarines, and nuclear weapons changed warfare, but none removed the need for the earlier capabilities around them.

Notes

The argument rejects the recurring claim that a new technology makes an entire older arm obsolete. Tanks did not remove infantry, nor did carriers, submarines, or nuclear weapons eliminate the value of surface ships and air bases. New technologies create additional ways to fight and additional problems that a force must address. A force has to integrate new tools while retaining the capabilities that still solve other parts of the problem.
