Chapter · 20:21-22:22

The Tatra class balanced guns, speed and endurance

The Tatra class replaced Huszar conservatism with 100 mm guns, twin torpedo tubes, 32.5-knot speed and useful endurance.

Notes

The Tatra class carried two Skoda 100 mm K11 guns with 50-calibre barrels, a substantial improvement for coastal raiding over the Huszars' light battery. Six 66 mm guns and two twin 450 mm torpedo mounts completed the armament. Some of the smaller guns were later replaced by anti-aircraft mountings. Although the 66 mm weapons were marketed as anti-torpedo-boat guns, many Tatra crews considered their 100 mm weapons more useful for that task. A complement of 105 marked an increase over the roughly 70 to 80 sailors carried by a Huszar. The ships combined a 32.5-knot top speed with a 1,600-nautical-mile range at 12 knots.
