Task groups are built around functions, while battle group is often branding

Carrier, amphibious, logistics, and submarine groups are functional packages, and the battle-group label signals purpose more than a different organizational rule.

Notes

A task force can combine several battle groups or task groups under one operational purpose. The multinational image contains four groups: the British amphibious group with HMS Ocean as its flagship, two American carrier groups, and a French carrier group. Each subordinate group is organized around a function such as carrier aviation, amphibious delivery, logistics, or submarine operations. Carrier battle group, abbreviated CVBG, and carrier task group, abbreviated CTG, can describe the same organizational level. Battle group works as branding because it advertises the group's combat purpose rather than marking a separate place in the hierarchy.
