Chapter ยท 14:20-15:39

Carrier and amphibious groups as a naval division

Carrier and amphibious groups contribute different capabilities that can combine into a single global response force.

Notes

Naval task groups resemble the different brigades that combine into an army division. Armoured and infantry brigades contribute different capabilities; carrier and amphibious groups follow the same logic at sea. Commanders can combine these formations into a larger task force when a crisis requires more than a routine presence ship. Major groups may also make occasional global visits, but their continuing diplomatic value lies in being ready to respond together. The analogy explains why a fleet needs complementary formations, each prepared for its own part of a larger response.
